Community Invited to Attend the Summer Student Research Symposium The Emerging Caribbean Scientists (ECS) Program and the College of Science and Mathematics at the University of the Virgin Islands invite the community to the 17th Annual Summer Student Research Symposium.
The symposium will take place from 10 a.m. to noon, Friday, Aug. 2, in the Ralph Paiewonksy Library, St. Thomas Campus.
It will feature more than 40 current UVI student researchers. The students will present scientific posters to showcase their summer research projects that were conducted under the mentorship of UVI faculty. The research projects involve a variety of subjects, including astrophysics, marine biology, psychology, chemistry, statistics and computer science, just to name a few.
Civic organizations, summer youth camps and the general public are highly encouraged to attend to learn more about research taking place at UVI.

Nominations Being Sought for Awarding of Honorary UVI Degrees The University of the Virgin Islands has established a policy regarding the awarding of honorary doctoral degrees to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishments. Any member of the UVI administration, faculty, student body, staff, or the UVI Board of Trustees, may nominate a person to be the recipient of an honorary degree. Nominations are currently being accepted in the Office of the President and should be submitted in writing via e-mail submission to: honorarydegrees@uvi.edu. They must include:
1. A letter of nomination
2. Completed nomination form
3. Curriculum Vitae of the nominee
4. A document that clearly delineates distinguished achievements and the impact of those achievements, including supporting documents (i.e. scholarly documents, magazine articles, newspaper articles, citations for major prizes, etc.)
5. Other supporting documents as may be appropriate.
Note: Supporting documentation is of critical importance. A nomination form and the policy approved by the UVI Board of Trustees for awarding honorary doctoral degrees, including a full listing of the criteria.

RTPark Partners with National Development Council to Expand Economic Development Opportunities in the Territory The UVI Research and Technology Park (RTPark) announced on Monday that is has entered into a technical assistance contract with the National Development Council (NDC) to support, develop and assist in the implementation of economic and community development programs. The contract will also prepare proposals to access the dollars necessary to expand access to capital for technology-based firms as well as other businesses and projects that would strengthen the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The one-year contract with the New York-based non-profit officially commenced on July 1, 2019, and will be available to not only the RTPark and its current and prospective client companies, but also other public, quasi-public and civic USVI organizations that are conceptualizing or implementing economic or community development initiatives in the territory. These include the central government, the USVI Economic Development Authority (EDA), the VI Housing Finance Authority (VIHFA) and local non-profit foundations.
One of the largest (by assets under management), oldest and most geographically expansive U.S. Treasury Department certified Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI), the National Development Council administers sizable amounts of capital and specializes in investing in and lending to small and medium-sized operating businesses and catalytic real estate projects (e.g., commercial, industrial, residential, mixed-use, public and non-profit facilities) that help to expand job opportunities for local residents and strengthen regional economies.

UVI Basketball Camp Registration Underway Registration for the University of the Virgin Islands’ Buccaneers basketball camps is currently underway, with weeklong sessions set for late July and early August.
The camps — each five days long — will be held from July 22-26 and July 29-Aug. 2 at UVI’s Sports and Fitness Center on St. Thomas. Each day’s session will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with early drop off at 7:30 a.m. and late pick up running to 5:30 p.m. Pickups made after 5:30 p.m. will incur a $10 late fee per camper for every 30 minutes.
UVI men’s basketball coach Jeff Jones and women’s basketball coach Jackson Dolor, as well as the Buccaneers’ assistant coaches and players will lead the camps. The Basketball Camps are open to boys and girls from kindergarten through 12th grade.
The registration fee is $125 per camper, with group discount rates available.
