MSNBC Television Host, Political Analyst & Author Joy-Anne Reid to Speak at UVI 2019 Commencement; Distinguished UVI Alumni to Receive Honorary Degrees MSNBC national television host, political analyst, journalist, columnist and author Joy-Anne Reid will be the keynote speaker at the University of the Virgin Islands’ 2019 commencement ceremonies. Starting at 1 p.m., these ceremonies will take place on Thursday, May 16, on the campus grounds of the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix; and on Friday, May 17, at the Sports and Fitness Center on St. Thomas.
“As always we strive to bring outstanding individuals to our commencement so that they can inspire and stand as a model for what we want our students to become,” UVI President David Hall said. “She is an outstanding author, journalist, television personality and an overall outstanding individual who has helped MSNBC become more diverse in its appeal.”
Reid hosts “AM Joy,” which airs Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to noon. She is the author of the book, “Fracture: Barack Obama, the Clintons and the Racial Divide” and the co-editor, with Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne, of “We Are the Change We Seek: The Speeches of Barack Obama.” Her columns and articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, the Miami Herald, New York Magazine, The Daily Beast and other publications.

UVI to Celebrate 57th Charter Day on March 20, Student 100 Man March to Precede Ceremony The community is invited to celebrate Charter Day at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 20. Gov. Albert Bryan, Jr. — the first Governor of the Virgin Islands to be a graduate of the University of the Virgin Islands – will be the keynote speaker. He will address the University from the Great Hall on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Gov. Bryan’s remarks will be video conferenced to the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center Building on the St. Thomas Campus.
The event will begin with UVI’s “Brothers With A Cause” student organization hosting a 100 Man March that will end at the Great Hall. An engaging ceremony to commemorate the University’s 57 years of excellence will include a special reflection of the first College of the Virgin Islands President, Dr. Lawrence Wanlass, who passed in December 2018. Former Board of Trustees’ members, Jennifer Nugent-Hill and Edward E. Thomas, who the board recently recognized with the distinction of Trustee Emeritus status at the recent board meeting, will also be honored.

UVI Bucs Basketball Senior Point Guard Selected for NAIA All-Star Game University of the Virgin Islands 2019 senior point guard Harold Caldwell has been selected to play at the 2019 NAIA Men’s Basketball All-Star Game. The game is set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, in Kansas City, Mo.
Top players from both divisions I and II will be featured. “Harold came to UVI from Montgomery, Ala. and is a great addition to the UVI Men’s Basketball Team,” said Jeff Jones, UVI Head Men’s Basketball Coach. “We wish Harold much luck and success with this game and in all of his future endeavors and goals.”
The All-Star game is sponsored by Adidas.

Research of Two UVI Students Wins Top Awards at Emerging Researchers National Conference UVI students, Mekeda Mills and Azriel Williams, won best poster for their presentations at the Emerging Research National Conference. Mills and Williams went up against 800 student researchers with more than 700 presentations.
Mills’ research was titled “The Blood Traveler: Apicomplexan Blood Parasite of Dusky Damselfish.” Williams’ presentation was titled “Sex, Ideal and Self Body Perceptions, Depression, and Obesity in Unites States Virgin Islands’ Adolescents.”
“We are very proud of them,” said UVI Provost Dr. Camille McKayle. Approximately 15 UVI students travelled and presented at the conference as well.
ERN is an annual conference that highlights undergraduate research, and is funded through the National Science Foundation and hosted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). It is focused on those NSF programs in the Division of Human Resource Development that aims to increase the participation of those traditionally underrepresented in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

UVI Board of Trustees Approves New Tuition Pricing for Organization of Eastern Caribbean States, FY 2020 Budget & Grants Trustees Emeritus Status In the regular session of its quarterly meeting on March 2, on the Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix, the University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees unanimously approved new tuition pricing for selected members of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States under terms of individual Memorandums of Understanding (MOU).
The Board also voted to approve the individual MOUs which were between UVI and H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC), Anguilla Community College (ACC), Antigua State College (ASC), Antigua and Barbuda International Institute of Technology (ABIIT), and Dominica State College (DSC). The University entered into these agreements on various dates in January and March of 2019.
These MOUs establish, for a period of ten years, tuition rates to be charged to the undergraduate and graduate students from the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, inclusive of Montserrat, and Dominica, including those graduating from their respective colleges as per the terms of their MOUs.
The tuition rate for such students to enroll in undergraduate and graduate programs at UVI will be 1.75 times the tuition rates established for residents of the United States Virgin Islands to enroll in undergraduate or graduate programs at UVI effective fall 2019 and for the duration of the MOU.

UVI 57th Charter Day Walk/Run to be Held on March 22 on the AA Sheen Campus The 1Mile Walk/Run will take place promptly at 6:30 a.m. on March 22, 2019, tickets can be brought from the Bookstore on the University’s Albert A. Sheen St. Croix on St. Croix. The first 20 registered participants are guaranteed a commemorative T-shirt. Pre-registration for this event is open up until race day at 6 a.m. Registration is $10.
Prizes will be awarded to the first and second overall male and female walkers/runners and the first male and female UVI alumni, UVI student, UVI staff and UVI faculty walker/runner.
A light breakfast will be provided at the end of the event.
Pick-up registration forms from Shay Roberts at UVI’s Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix. Payment of cash or check payable to the University of the Virgin Islands must be accompanied by the completed form.
Parking will be available on the Sheen Campus.
