In a high-stakes Monday night meeting, the Territorial Committee of the V.I. Democratic Party demonstrated the territory’s significant influence on the national stage by unanimously voting to support U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris in her bid for the Democratic Party nomination. As states and territories nationwide consolidate their support, the V.I. delegation to the convention, led by chair Carol Burke, is now moving swiftly to ensure all 13 delegates also back Harris.
“By the end of tonight, it’s our goal to have secured all our delegates’ support for Vice President Harris,” Burke stated, emphasizing the fluidity of the situation where delegates could change their minds at the convention. Despite these uncertainties, she remained optimistic about the territory’s contribution, underscoring the critical importance of their 13 votes.
The urgency of the meeting was palpable as Burke navigated the complex dynamics of the nomination process. With Harris needing 1,976 votes to secure the nomination, the V.I.’s commitment could be a game-changer. “We’ve been combining our support, and it is our hope that by tomorrow morning we would have the full complement of our delegation supporting Harris as our nominee,” Burke said
The V.I. Democrats’ show of support, by way of Monday night’s vote, is historic, marking a significant moment for the territory, members added. “This is the closest we come to voting for president,” Burke said. “It’s important we do this right and effectively.”
Adding to the significance of the meeting, Renee Petersen, St. Croix district chair, highlighted the fluid nature of the support but expressed confidence in the momentum. “Kamala Harris is more than halfway there, and we hope to add our 13 votes before the end of the night,” she said.
State Democratic Party chair Stedmann Hodge Jr. emphasized the national unity behind Harris. “The Association of State Democratic Committees has shown unanimous support, and state chairs from every territory are backing Harris. It’s crucial we move as fast as possible,” he said.
Burke added that her leadership at this time must be decisive. “Since Biden stepped aside, he’s released the delegates, and my job is to whip our delegates into supporting Harris. We’ve tried to maintain solid support for our 13 votes,” she said.
The meeting also highlighted the broader significance of the territory’s involvement. “Momentum has already built, and we have a real might behind us as small as we are,” said Burke, adding that as the August convention approaches, the V.I. Democratic Party is poised to make a substantial impact.
“It’s a historic and proud moment for us,” said committee member Florine Audain-Hassell. “We hope and pray all get behind Kamala Harris — she’s going to fight for the heart and soul of the Virgin Islanders and America.”
Member Kyza Callwood concurred.
“Supporting and voting for Kamala Harris as our Democratic nominee brings a wealth of experience, leadership and a vision for a more inclusive and prosperous America,” he said. “With a track record of advocating for justice, equality and economic opportunity, Harris is poised to address the pressing challenges facing our nation. Her experience as vice president, U.S. senator and California attorney general demonstrates her ability to navigate complex issues and deliver results.”
