VI Cycling Federation Schedules VI National Time Trial Championship Races, Governor’s Cup Race

The Virgin Islands Cycling Federation will conclude its competitive season on St. Croix with an individual time trial race on Saturday, Aug. 12, and a road race on Sunday, Aug. 13.  Both races are open to the public and will begin promptly at 7 a.m. Race-day registration will be held onsite from 6 a.m. to 6:45 a.m. Helmets must be worn.

On Saturday, the V.I. National Time Trial Championship will begin at Junie’s Bar & Restaurant on Southside R0ad. In an individual time-trial format, cyclists are sent off from the starting line at one-minute intervals.

The Elite group will ride to the intersection of Union and Mt. Washington, turn around and head back to Cane Garden, turn around and head back to Union and Mt. Washington, then finish at the entrance to Ha’Penny for a total of 24 miles.

All other racing categories (Expert, Sport, Masters, Women, Juniors) will race from Junie’s to Union and Mt. Washington and finish at Ha’Penny for a total of 12 miles.

On Sunday, the Governor’s Cup Championship Road Race will start and finish at the former Great Pond Store on Rt. 624. Elite riders will cover 50 miles while completing two 25-mile loops. The Expert riders will race 40 miles; the Sport group will race for 30 miles; and the Masters, Women and Junior riders will complete a 15-mile course.

In addition to cash prizes for the top three finishers in each category, mid-race prizes called primes will be awarded to the first person to reach a designated location on the course. The Office of the Governor and the V.I. Department of Sports, Parks and Recreation are sponsors of the road race.

The V.I. National Cycling Champions will also be declared at the conclusion of the two races.  Although the time trial and the road race are independent races, cyclists must compete in both races in order to earn the title of VI Champion.  The times of both races will be added together, and the person in each category with the lowest combined time will earn the champion trophy.
