Members of the Virgin Islands Board of Education attended the 2024 National School Boards Association (NSBA) Equity and Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C. from Jan. 27 through Jan. 30, to address critical education matters impacting students across the Virgin Islands. The conference brought together education leaders, policymakers and advocates from across the nation to discuss and collaborate on issues of equity and advocacy in education.
During the conference, the Virgin Islands Board of Education representatives actively participated in workshops, panels and discussions aimed at advancing equitable education policies and practices. Key focus areas included addressing educational disparities, promoting inclusive learning environments and advocating for increased federal support for Virgin Islands schools.
In a significant development, the board members had the opportunity to meet with Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett to discuss pressing education matters affecting students in the Virgin Islands. The discussions centered around securing federal resources, improving infrastructure and fostering policies that ensure equitable educational opportunities for all students.
Board Chairman Kyza A. Callwood, Ph.D., expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage with Congresswoman Plaskett, stating, “Our meeting with Congresswoman Plaskett was a valuable exchange of ideas and perspectives. We appreciate her dedication to championing education, and we look forward to continued collaboration to address the unique needs of our students in the Virgin Islands.”
