VITEMA Weather Advisory Update

A flood watch for the territory and potentially heavy rainfall is expected from Tuesday through Thursday morning, VITEMA announced.

The National Weather Service of San Juan has issued a Flash Flood Watch for all of the U.S. Virgin Islands in advance of expected thunderstorms and rainfall in the amount of two to four inches with the opportunity for high winds and hazardous seas, particularly on the northern shores, according to the press release.

With the expected rainfall, residents are advised to avoid low-lying areas that are prone to flooding. Please exercise extreme caution while driving, particularly if driving through standing water. Wind gusts of up to 40mph are possible with this passing system, the press release stated.

The Virgin Islands Police Department and the Public Works Department are both monitoring the weather system and the roadways to ensure the safety of the community. The Education Department is also closely monitoring the system and will be making a determination early Wednesday morning on the status of school openings, it said.

Any announcements of school closures or delayed openings will be made through the department’s website and social media as well as through the Alert VI system, according to the press release.

For the most recent updates, residents are urged to sign up for Alert VI on VITEMA’s website or check for updates on Facebook and Instagram.
