VITFF Bulletin: Virgin Islanders Competing in the Outdoor Track and Field Season

Malique Smith

Malique Smith

Virgin Islands Track and Field Team member Malique Smith competed in Windsor, Canada, on June 24 in the Johnny Loaring Classic, which is part of the World Athletic Continental Tour Challenger Series. Smith competed in the 400m hurdles and placed 4th overall in the 2nd section final running a time of 50. 65, which was just one hundredth of a second of his personal best.

Malique will compete next in the Flora Hyacinth Virgin Islands National Championship, which will be held on July 9 and 10 on St. Croix, Virgin Islands.

Tara Grey

Virgin Islands Track and Field Team member Tara Grey, a recent graduate from Sickles High School, competed in the Adidas Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C., from June 16 – 18. Tara finished 7th overall in the triple jump with a personal record of 11.38m; in the long jump, she jumped 5.01m for 37th place.

The Virgin Islands Olympic Committee is sending six athletes from the Virgin Islands Track and Field Federation to the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games held in El Salvador. The Games are already in progress – See Schedule: https://results-sansalvador2023.com/#/schedule/disciplines and Results: https://sansalvador2023.com/en/  The Track and Field events will start on July 2.

Michelle Smith

Michelle Smith will be representing the Virgin Islands in the Women’s 400m hurdles. Smith holds the V.I. National Record of 56.66 in that event, which she set on April 29.

Smith is ranked:

No. 1 in the World for U18

No. 2 in the World for U20

No. 6 in the CAC Ranking

She will be competing at 6:40 p.m., July 3, in the 400m hurdles semifinal at 8:10 pm., July 4, in the final.

Rachel Conhoff

Rachel Conhoff will compete in the Women’s 1500m. Conhoff holds the V.I. National record in the 1500m with a 4:30.53 that she ran on May 14 in Chester, Penn. Conhoff is No. 7 in the CAC Ranking.

Rachel Conhoff will be competing on July 6 in the 1500m final.

Mikaela Smith

Mikaela Smith will be competing in the 800m. Smith is the V.I. Indoor 800m National record holder with a time of 2:12.44 on Jan. 21, 2022, at the Vanderbilt Invitational. For the CAC Ranking, Smith is currently ranked No. 12 in the 800m with a 2:11.49.

She will be competing at 7:25 p.m., July 4, in the 800m semi-final and at 6:30 p.m., July 5, in the final.

Yashira Rhymer-Stuart

Yashira Rhymer-Stuart

Yashira Rhymer-Stuart will be competing in the high jump. Rhymer-Stuart is the VI National record holder in the high jump with a jump of 1.81m on April 6, 2019. She is ranked No. 11 in the CAC ranking with a jump of 1.70m.

Rhymer-Stuart will be competing at 5:10 p.m., July 7, in the high jump final.

Maia Campbell

Maia Campbell will be competing in the shot put. Campbell is the VI National record holder in the shot put with a throw of 17.33m on May 16, 2021. Campbell is currently ranked No. 5 in the CAC Ranking for the shot put with a 16.52m.

She will be competing at 6 p.m., July 6, in the shot put final.

 Eddie Lovett

Eddie Lovett will be competing in the 110m hurdles. Lovett is the V.I. National record holder in the 110m hurdles with a time of 13.31 on Aug. 8, 2015. Lovett is currently ranked No. 8 in the CAC Ranking for the 110m hurdles with a time of 13.80.

He will be competing at 5:20 p.m., July 4, the 110m hurdles semi-final and at 6:50 p.m., July 5, in the final
