Cleanup Committee Beautifies Village

by Sis Frank

We may not enjoy the masses of cars and trucks, but at least Cruz Bay is neat and clean.  Let’s keep it that way!

Megan Stars Again
Karen Samuel’s niece Megan Hodge led Penn State’s strong volleyball team to victory over Minnesota with 19 kills, two blocks and the match point in a total of three games shown on ESPNII this past weekend.
It was a joy to watch Megan’s natural ability on the court — perfect coordination in her serves as they sailed over the Minnesota team to score!

Provost Leads Camp Celebration in Virginia Beach Community
Jim and Terri Provost’s older son, Vic, is the manager of the Urban Arts Center of the Center for Community Development Inc. in Portsmouth, Virginia. For six weeks this summer, he also directed “Camp Celebration 2007 — and Still I Rise.” This was a highly successful program involving young people in creative writing, dance (taught by Vic’s wife, Rachelle), steel pan directed by Vic, and African drumming.

Jim showed me the booklet created by the children who enrolled in the Performing Arts Academy — there was rap, poetry, music and creative drawing included. Vic’s introductory letter expressed his pride in the students’ natural ability.

I am especially proud of Vic who was a star member of Steel Unlimited II steel band at the St. John School of the Arts in the 90s. It is gratifying to know that he is passing on those disciplines taught to him by Director Rudy Wells.

There are many West Indians living in the Virginia Beach area — naturally, they hold a panorama each summer with steel bands competing from all over the states. Vic’s band finished second this summer!

Lincoln Liburd Wins Again
Congratulations to Lincoln Liburd of Gifft Hill School on his second IAA cross country race at UVI! Forgive my error in last week’s Tradewinds — Lincoln is the winning son, not Levi, the father.

JESS’s Fathers Breakfast Is Big Success
It was encouraging to see that so many fathers turned out to share their experiences in their children’s education!
