Wha’s Happ’nin’ by Sis Frank

Election Results
Congratulations to the election winners! The most exciting race in years — and a joy to see so many old friends in line.

Tommy Star Awards
In last week’s column I congratulated Captain Cornelius Matthias on his award, but neglected to mention another popular and deserving St. Johnian, Vera Powell-Payne, who was honored for her outstanding services in the hospitality industry at Caneel Bay. Vera inherited her natural grace and charm from her parents, who have passed on.

AARP Convention
Bev Biziewski and Joan Bermingham certainly lived it up. Bev’s story of their activities showed us that “retired persons” can still have a ball.

History of Anegada on Sale
We are all waiting for this book written by a cousin of Mrs. Calvin George Sr. to come to St. John.

Two Special Ladies Have Left Us
Mrs. Floresa Williams, mother of the wonderful Williams family (of E&C Gas Station fame) has passed away. She was the widow of Captain Josephus, who was one of the funniest St. Johnians that I can remember from my early days on the island. Everything was a joke to him — he and Miss Floresa passed this gift of enjoying life on to their children. I can remember a day when Miss Floresa and I sat on boxes of oil cans at E&C while Josephus entertained us with stories — one in particular, asking me if I noticed that St. Croix “moved over” the night before in the absolutely flat sea. That was the night that we could actually see car lights on St. Croix.

Another special lady has been seen on St. John for several years after she joined her daughter, Vicki Uzzell. Mrs. Mary Koons passed away this past week in the states. We all will miss this determined lady walking through the village, slowly, but with great inner strength.
Our sincere sympathy to both families.

Please Return Our Stages
Mr. Frank Powell Sr. made 16 platforms for “Steel Unlimited” in the 70s. I have lent them to various groups in the past, but during my absence this summer, several sections were borrowed and now are among the missing. No problem, just bring them back, we need them.
