Caneel Bay Resort Kicks Off “Hot Type Visiting Author Series” for 2007

It’ll be Manhattan Island meets the Caribbean Islands when New Yorker essayist Adam Gopnik checks into Caneel Bay Resort, a Rosewood Resort, to kick off the resort’s “Hot Type Visiting Author Series” for 2007.

The best-selling author, one of only two staff writers at the august literary magazine, will be discussing his latest essay collection, Through the Children’s Gate: A Home in New York (Knopf 2006) while participating in meet-and-greets with resort guests for three days at Caneel Bay January 28, 29 and 30.

A popular amenity at Caneel Bay and other Rosewood properties, the exclusive “Hot Type” program offers access to the latest wave of books from best-selling authors months before they are available for sale.

Guests enjoy advance copies of new fiction and non-fiction titles during their stay, as well as indulge in participatory programs with renowned authors such as Gopnik through the offshoot Visiting Author Series.

A writer, essayist and critic of no small renown, Gopnik has written for the New Yorker since 1986, including the magazine’s popular “Paris Journals” series, which he published in the collection Paris to the Moon (Random House) in 2000. Gopnik’s latest book, Through the Children’s Gate, includes 20 essays chronicling his family’s relocation from Paris to New York.

Publisher’s Weekly praised the author’s “mannered, occasionally gilded prose” in Through the Children’s Gate, noting it conveys “that New York still represents a kind of childlike hope — ‘for something big to happen.’”

Gopnik will participate in numerous events with Caneel Bay’s guests throughout his four-day stay, with an itinerary including:

• Sunday, January 28: Afternoon Tea at Turtle Bay Estate House, 4 to 5 p.m.

• Monday, January 29: Managing Director’s Cocktail Party at Equator Restaurant, 6 to 7 p.m.

• Tuesday, January 30: Literary Dinner with a special menu created by Executive Chef Roland Czekelius, with wine pairings, in the Wine Room 7 to 10 p.m. This event is open to the public with advance reservations.
