A fire engulfed and destroyed an Anna’s Retreat home late Thursday night on St. Thomas. The call to 911 came in around 10:04 p.m. and two units initially responded, Fire Service Director Daryl George said Friday.

Two occupants were home at the time but got out safely and were not injured, he said. Ultimately, five vehicles and 12 firefighters responded, getting the blaze under control in an hour and 45 minutes. They cleaned up and investigated for another 45 minutes. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

George said there had been comments on social media that the Fire Service took too long to arrive.

“We can’t respond until we get a call. We responded within four minutes of getting the call. The whole building was completely engulfed by the time the truck got there,” George said. The fire was at 148-365 Anna’s Retreat.
