No one was injured in a house fire that gutted the second floor of a residential dwelling in Wintberg on Monday morning on St. Thomas.

Sirens pierced the air and the smell of smoke wafted down the hillside above Magens Bay Park as trucks from three fire stations rushed to the scene.

The blaze engulfed most of the top floor of the wooden roofed structure before firefighters were able to douse it.

A first responder who spoke on condition of anonymity after 24 hours had passed without any official statement about the incident said one of the residents occupying one of two apartments on the upper floor of the wood-roofed house was at work. The other occupant, he said, was able to grab a few belongings as she ran from the house.

The first floor of the dwelling, which the responder said was not occupied at the time, was concrete and undamaged.
