FYR is LIT (Fueling Youth Reading is Leaders in Training) is a hybrid literacy mentorship program designed to ensure that teens and young readers contribute to society, speak freely and respectfully gain educational opportunities for personal growth. The leadership team is excited to announce the “2022 Student Voice in V.I. Government Campaign.”

The poster campaign aims to empower all students attending school in the U.S.V.I. to communicate their ideas on the territory thoughtfully and intentionally with candidates in the current gubernatorial election.

Questions to consider when creating a poster might include:

  1. What would adequate transportation look like for youth in the territory?
  2. What types of recreational activities would you like to see for youth in the territory?
  3. How will you be better prepared for the workforce in the future?
  4. Describe the service you believe will help youth the most in the territory.

Civic engagement is essential for a sustainable society and F.Y.R. is L.I.T. believes that young people generate great ideas and insights about their environments when given the space to share. By gathering insight from youth territory-wide, we can better understand gaps and pinpoint solutions to improve experiences for all.

Participants in the Community Cafe for Contract Day, held in October 2021, identified clear values and entry points for all community members to provide leaders with more information on the community’s needs. F.Y.R. is L.I.T. campaign this year is clear: All generations must hold elected leaders responsible. This year we want to make sure that students in the territory have a voice and can sow seeds today for our future tomorrow.

F.Y.R. is L.I.T. aims to collect at least 100 responses from students across the territory and will work with the National Art Honor Society at Good Hope Country Day school to compile the responses into a masterpiece that showcases the students’ responses.

The campaign will launch on Monday, Oct. 3. The deadline for submissions is Monday, Oct. 10. Students can submit their original artwork on an 8.5” x 11” sheet of paper via email to fuelingyouthreading@gmail.com or drop it off at the student’s school office.
