On Saturday, April 23, 2022, Jelani James was arrested for attempted murder after being released into his father’s custody on Friday, April 22, 2022, by Magistrate Brow Ross. On Thursday, April 21, 2022, he was arrested and charged with home invasion, burglary 1st, and 2nd. At 1:49 a.m, on April 23, 2022, the father of Jelani James called 911 requesting assistance with his son, who was not complying with his orders.
According to James’ father, he was pushed out of his apartment by James, at which point he called 911. While calling 911, Jelani James retrieved his father’s firearm and fired multiple rounds through the window, hitting the father in the neck area.
The gunshot wound was non-fatal, and he was able to drive himself to the Juan F. Luis Hospital for treatment.
Entry was made into the family’s rental units by the Special Operations Bureau, and Jelani James was arrested without incident. The firearm was recovered. He was processed and taken to the John Bell Correctional Facility pending his advice of rights hearing on Monday, April 25, 2022.
