J’Ouvert Fashion in the Streets of St. Thomas

Those who tell the story of Carnival traditions say when J’Ouvert Morning began, people would come from their homes in the pre-dawn hours dressed in their nightclothes to dance to the music of roving bands. Over the years, J’Ouvert couture has evolved from the days of pajama pants and nightshirts to the comical, the whimsical, and the outrageous.

J’Ouvert has also become a day for divas to represent with styles that make a statement and could not be confused with attire seen on Main Street during Carnival parades. A typical J’Ouvert outfit includes denim shorts over fishnet stockings and sneakers in fluorescent colors. Tee shirts topping crinoline tutus are popular as well. See-through fabrics over solid-colored thongs and crop tops with ankle boots appear at the J’Ouvert. Mesh tops and jumpsuits cover lacy lingerie.

More daring dressers may opt for body stockings with thongs.

Whether they are young, slim, plus-sized, or mature, J’Ouvert morning street fashionistas turn out on Veteran’s Drive with some show-stopping looks.

Here are some of the looks that made it to the Thursday morning tramp in 2022:
