Lady Legends Sweep Christmas Week Games

The Department of Sports, Parks and Recreation’s RBI 23U Women’s Softball League played two games Christmas week. RBI stands for Reviving Baseball in Inner City, has a local program that is providing training and game opportunities for the young boys and girls within our community. The boys are engaging in baseball while the girls are focusing on the sport of softball. Here are the results from last week’s action.

Virgin Islands Lady Legends 13 – Virgin Islands Siafu 8
The Lady Legends were less than perfect on the field, committing nine errors in their game against Siafu but somehow managed to escape with a 13-8 win on Monday, December 20, 2022, at the Joseph Aubain Ballpark.

Lady Legends starting pitcher Sapphire Cruz pitched well, keeping Siafu hitless and scoreless in her two innings of work. Mya Jack pitched four innings for Siafu striking out six batters, but the right-hander allowed 13 runs. The Lady Legends used two consecutive five-run innings to secure the win.

Going into the bottom of the fourth, the Legends trailed 4-3. Siafu were in the holiday spirit as they committed an error that kept the inning alive for the Legends. Shania Thomas and Rhea Benjamin displayed their gratitude by stroking back-to-back doubles allowing the Lady Legends to score five runs in the fourth inning. In the fifth, Nekeyla Amy and Thomas came up with RBI hits, helping the Legends to put five more runs on the board.

Cruz was the winning pitcher for Lady Legends. Mya Jack took the loss for Siafu. Thomas went 3-of-4 at the plate for Lady Legends. Amey and Benjamin both collected one hit each in the game for the winners. Jack, Jahniya Williams, and Shaquilla Lewis each had one hit for Siafu.

The bats were alive and well for both teams in this high-scoring seesaw affair as Lady Legends outlasted Siafu 12-10 in seven innings on Thursday, December 23, 2022, at the Joseph Aubain Ballpark.

This was the first game all season that all seven innings were needed. Both teams combined to pound out 16 hits and had four lead changes along the way. The Lady Legends were behind by one run at the end of the second inning. Two errors, two walks, and two batters hit by pitches allowed the Legends to plate five runs in the top of the third, giving them a 6-2 lead. Siafu replied in the bottom of the fourth with a triple fest. Ky’Anah Lake started things off by blazing an RBI triple to center field. Ty’elle Jeppesen followed her with an RBI triple of her own to left field.

Two batters later, Nia Roper completed the triple-triple by hitting another three-bagger to deep center field. Siafu also recorded singles by Amiya Greaves and Yemeli Rodriguez in that inning but only produced four runs. Lady Legends regained control of the game by scoring three runs in the final two innings. Shanice Thomas came in and closed the door in the bottom of the seventh, striking out two of the three batters she faced.

Niyana Chesterfield was the winning pitcher for Lady Legends. Ty’elle Jeppesen recorded the loss. Shielda James was the big bat for Lady Legends, going 2-of-4 with 2 RBIs. Rhea Benjiman, Thomas, Alahya Jackson, and Gabrielle Boschulte all registered one hit each for Lady Legends. Jeppesen was the star at the plate for Siafu, going 3-of-4 with 2 RBIs. Lake went 2-of-3 for Siafu. Mya Jack, Monet Creque, Roper, Rodriquez, and Greaves all collected one hit for Siafu in a losing effort.

The teams will meet again on Monday, December 27, 2022, at the Joseph Aubain Ballpark at 6:45 pm.
