New St. John Organization Focusing on Helping Friends with Hardships

When Craig Crandall was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma recently, friends and family members were devastated, yet through their grief, the family crated a new organization designed to help residents dealing with similar situations.

While coping with the reality of the diagnosis, Crandall’s daughter had the idea to host a fundraiser to help off-set the daunting cost of chemotherapy treatment, explained Laurie Crandall.

“It started with our daughter wanting to throw a fundraiser to help her dad,” said Laurie Crandall. “And we decided to make this a little bigger and better. So we started a foundation called Friends Helping Friends and we’ll have a fundraiser each year to help someone in need.”

Friends Helping Friends plans to host yearly events to help residents in need and is operating under the fiscal umbrella of the St. John Community Foundation, according to information provided by the organization.

“Our mission is to the help ease some of the financial burdens of contributing resident members in need,” according to prepared information from Friends Helping Friends.

“Regardless of the nature of their hardship, we would like to be a shining light to them and their family and hope to inspire our community along the way.”

The group’s first event, with proceeds going to Craig Crandall, will be a “Kick Cancer in the Cornhole” on Saturday, August 4, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Inn at Tamarind Court.

Get a team together and get in on the cornhole tournament, or buy raffle tickets for the chance to win some amazing prizes while raising some much needed money for a community member in need.

The grand prize for the raffle is a full week stay at a one bedroom unit at the luxurious Grande Bay Resort in Cruz Bay. The second place winner will take home $500 in cash and the third place prize is a $250 gift certificate for Home Depot.

The event will also feature live music and great food, so be sure to come out the Inn at Tamarind Court on Saturday, August 4, from 2 to 8 p.m. to have some serious fun for a great cause.
