One Suspect in May 2023 STJ Robbery Arrested; Second Suspect Still At Large

Two men robbed a jewelry store on St. John in May 2023, and one man shot the owner during the process. One of the suspects has been arrested and the other is still at large, the V.I. Police Department reported.

A preliminary investigation of the burglary that occurred on May 18, 2023, at around 2:00 p.m., revealed that two unknown men entered the St. John Bracelet store. While inside, the owner sustained a single gunshot wound to the face by one of the unknown men. Both men later exited the business with an unknown amount of jewelry from the location, according to the police report.

The victim was later transported to the Roy Lester Schneider Regional Medical Center for
treatment. During this investigation, it was discovered that one of the suspects in this case
was identified as 21-year-old Jamari Gumbs, the police report stated.

On Friday, a warrant was issued for Gumbs, which was executed on Saturday. Gumbs was arrested and charged with multiple charges to include robbery in the first degree, robbery in the second degree, robbery in the third degree, assault in the first degree, assault in the third degree, attempted murder in the first degree, possession of an unlicensed firearm during a crime of violence, aiding and abetting, possession of an unlicensed firearm within 1,000 feet from a park, public school, and conspiracy, the report stated.

Unable to post bail in the amount of $250,000, Gumbs was turned over to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advice of a rights hearing, police said.
