Christmas for the Animals To Usher in a Bright New Year

By Bonny Corbeil

As we head into December, our spirit of giving is ignited. We extend our hearts and wallets to those in need. This includes the homeless and abandoned and abused animals on our island.

Once again this year, the St. John Animal Care Center will host its annual “Christmas for The Animals” event,  and it will be a grand and wonderful party! Dr. and Mrs. Jerome Levy, owners of Kismet Villa, have graciously agreed to allow us to use their unique and beautiful home for this gala affair.

Exciting plans are underway by a Kismet Planning Committee which includes ACC board members Jen Dale and Jennifer Troisi; Paul Devine; and Kismet on-site managers Michelle Petersen and Adrian Novak. Yours truly is chairing this committee.

The theme is “Arabian Nights” because of the incredible design of Kismet, which includes individual hand-made mosaic tiling throughout. Dress can be either island fancy or Arabian fantasy (think Lawrence of Arabia and “I Dream of Jeannie”).

If you Google “Kismet Villa St. John” you can see first-hand the splendor of Kismet located at the top of Maria’s Bluff in Great Cruz Bay.
The event will be Saturday, January 5 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Mark your calendars now. Ticket sales are limited. Tickets will be $100 each including shuttle service.

Our best St. John caterers will be showcasing their unique dishes and talents with wine pairings. Watch for ticket sales in the near future from key outlets and ACC board members.

All proceeds will benefit our good work with and for needy animals. This would be a wonderful Christmas present for St. John animal lovers, advocates or employees who would appreciate a grand evening out.

If you are unable to attend or purchase tickets, we invite you to consider sending a “Christmas for the Animals” check to: St. John ACC, PO Box #429, St. John, V.I. 00831, or drop it off at the shelter next to the Elaine I. Sprauve Library.

Dr. Marty Becker’s Book Signing:
Those who were able to attend Dr. Marty Becker’s book signing event at the St. John Artists’ Association at the Lumberyard complex on November 20 had a wonderful time! Dr. Becker was a pleasure to meet, and it is little wonder that he is a best-selling author, animal advocate and vet.

His books are wonderful — all under $15, and they make great Christmas gifts. The Chicken Soup for The Dog Lover’s Soul/Cat Lover’s Soul have the kind of stories that are perfect for family reading. All of the books are signed by Dr. Becker.

They are available for sale at Book and Bean, Sugar Birds, Big Fish/Little Fish, and St. John Properties. All proceeds to benefit the St. John ACC. Buy them soon before they sell out!

A special thanks to ACC board member Nancy Louis and her husband John Diehl for hosting our reception for Dr. Becker and to ACC board member Bill Dove, his wife Kathy and daughter Christie for their planning. Dr. Becker has agreed to return to St. John in the future so you will have another opportunity to meet this great man.

Thanks also to the above outlets for selling these books on our behalf, the AASJ for allowing us to use their wonderful space and to St. John Tradewinds news edtior Jaime Elliott for her wonderful interview with Dr. Becker in last week’s Tradewinds.
