Wha’s Happ’nin’

“Santa Claus” Simon Has Returned from Wild West

by Sis Frank

December 1 and 2 featured the annual jazz and gospel shows at the Winston Wells ball field. St. Thomian Ron Nimmo sang at the Beach Bar the Sunday before tuning up his vocal chords — what a lovely voice! Louie Issac sat in on drums — back in ancient history we old-timers made the trip to St. Thomas just to hear him play with Marty Clarke!

Congratulations to Friends of the VINP
Joe Kessler welcomed the crowds that poured in and out with cool champagne. There are fascinating items made by local artisans — I have a SHAK-SHAK made of a heavy twig covered in tropical patterns — with beer can tops ringing out the rhythms! Created by “Ital” Anthony!

Rudy and Irene Celebrated 35 Years of Creating Beautiful Jewelry
I remember the Pattons when they started their business in that tiny room next to Miss Meada’s — Janet Rutnik’s shop and Don and Debbie Schnell were there too — this is the “Land of Opportunity” (if you keep your sense of humor!)

Glen Speer Keeps on Creating
Congratulations to Glen who should be very proud of Mongoose Junction’s 30th anniversary! What an artistic “shopping center” — beautifully designed, with a natural stream running through, surrounded by lovely landscaping, he has given so much to the island. I am grateful for his design of the St. John School of the Arts and the thousands of hours donated to its construction! (It only took 10 years!)

MaLinda Media’s St. John Magazine Continues To Receive Raves
In all segments of the St. John community, I keep hearing compliments on the first issue of this beautiful publication! Be sure to buy one, or more, for Christmas gifts!

Is Bob O’Connor’s Latest Venture a Three-story Hotel?
Bob — be sure to do some creative planting and stonework — maybe you can transplant the palms from the Texaco. Remember, you are right in the middle of Cruz Bay so we all expect it will be attractive.

Bajo el Sol’s Show is Outstanding
Livy Hitchcock, owner, is displaying her Greek creations among many other stunning artworks shown at this Mongoose Junction II gallery.

Bernice Boynes Receives Honors
“Miss B.” has always been a major part of the St. John community — no matter what her responsibilities were, she gave from her heart. Now, she is the major director of Boyson Inc., the car ferry organization. I can’t imagine keeping track of the boats, not to mention the personalities involved, every single day!

She was honored by the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Sigma Theta Omega Chapter, in their Celebration of Excellence Program at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort on St. Thomas. She was singled out as an outstanding woman of her generation.

Cherie Boynes-Jackson and her two children Chemica and Mikey were off-island but completely surprised their mother (and grandmother) by flying back for the ceremony! “Miss B.” — we are proud of you! Congratulations!

St. Johnian ladies Kamaria Penn, J’Nay Penn, Saidah Pickering, Shania Dawson, Monae Clarke, Shakwana Albert and Dietra Powell were also honored as “young pearls” of the future.

Lawrence Leaves Again
Grapevine Salon has lost him again! It’s back to Baton Rouge and the Mercedes convertible — but, hopefully, he will return in the spring! We miss him already!
