A St. Croix man faces attempted murder and assault charges after a woman alleges she was assaulted and choked during an argument between the two on Monday, the V.I. Police Department reported Wednesday.

The 911 Emergency Call Center dispatched Criminal Investigation Bureau officers to investigate Monday after the victim said she was assaulted at a Strawberry Hill residence on Monday.

The victim reported that she and her boyfriend got into a verbal dispute after she asked him about his female friend, according to the police report. The argument escalated, he became physical, and he assaulted and choked her until she could not breathe, it said.

The victim was able to escape and was taken to the Juan F. Luis Hospital on St. Croix, where she was treated for her injuries, police said.

On Tuesday at 2:51 p.m., members of the Criminal Investigation Bureau arrested Ralph Cook Jr., 51, without incident at his Strawberry Hill residence on charges of second-degree assault domestic violence, simple assault and battery, and attempted murder, the report stated.

No bail was set per the domestic violence statue. Cook was transported to the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility pending his advice of rights hearing.
