The death of an 89-year-old St. Croix man reported Monday afternoon was the 72nd COVID-19-related death in the U.S. Virgin Islands since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the V.I. Department of Health.
According to the department, there have been 26 COVID deaths on St. Croix, 43 on St. Thomas and three on St. John.
In its news release, the Department of Health said getting vaccinated with one of the COVID-19 vaccines is among the best ways to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The vaccine also prevents severe illness and death. Residents can schedule an appointment by calling 340-777-8227 or going online at the DOH website, covid19usvi.com/vaccines. Walk-ins are also accepted at the V.I. Community Vaccination Centers.
St. Croix’s Community Vaccination Center is at the Nissan Center in La Grande Princesse, adjacent to the Honda Dealership and The Paint Shop, on the same side of the street as Food Town. The St. Thomas center is in the community clinic on the second floor of the Schneider Regional Medical Center.
The Department also urged residents to continue following basic precautionary measures: practice social distancing, wear a mask when in the company of others outside of those in your household, clean frequently used areas thoroughly, and wash your hands often with soap and warm water.
