Task Force Arrests St. Thomas Teen for Unlicensed Firearm

 

A teen is in custody after officers with the “Operation Gridlock” task force found a loaded firearm with an obliterated serial number early Sunday morning on St. Thomas.

On Sunday at 1 a.m., the V.I. Police Department “Operation Gridlock” task force was alerted that four males, dressed all in black, were carrying firearms near the Zanzi Bar on the Crown Bay dock, according to a VIPD report released Monday.

The task force consists of officers from the VIPD’s Special Operations Bureau, the Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs, and the Department of Planning and Natural Resources. They were providing police presence at a function on the Crown Bay dock, according to the report.

Alerted to the men with guns, the officers responded to the location and located four males fitting the description. An officer intercepted K’Mahn Kishawn Hughes, 18, and discovered a a Taurus 92C handgun with an obliterated serial number, with one round chambered and 12 rounds in the magazine, the report stated.

Hughes was placed under arrest, handed over to Port Authority officers, and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, the report stated.  

Hughes was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections after failing to post bail in the amount of $50,000, and pending his advice of rights hearing, according to the report.
