Virtue of the Week – Courage
Virtue of the Week focuses on building peaceful and caring communities through understanding and fostering the practice of virtues. The Source supports the Virtues Project and will publish one virtue developed by the project each week.
Courage
Courage transforms fear and shame into determination. It is embracing what must be done, even when it is difficult. When we are tempted to give up, courage supports us to take the next step. It allows us to face adversity with confidence. Courage opens us to new possibilities. We need courage to accept the truth, pick ourselves up after a mistake, make amends, and try again.
Quote: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts.” -Winston Churchill
The Practice of Courage
I reach beyond my comfort zone.
I welcome new challenges.
I do what I know is right, regardless of the costs.
I face the truth with humility and openness.
I don’t allow shame and fear to hold me back.
I fully accept life’s invitations.
Questions for Discussion
- Is there anything hindering community members from reaching beyond their comfort zone? What supports are needed?
- In our community, do we invite space for every member to face the truth with humility and openness? What does that look like?
- When discussing social justice, do we have the courage to face adversity with confidence?
- Is there anything impeding community members from taking the journey into social justice with their whole hearts? How can we provide support/encouragement on the journey?
