VIWMA, UVI-CES, Island Green Offer Free Composting Workshops

Composting is a way for people to reduce, reuse and recycle organic waste from the kitchen.

In observance of VI Recycles Month, the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) has partnered with the University of the Virgin Islands Cooperative Extension Service (UVI-CES) and Island Green Living Association to present free community composting workshops on St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John in November. Island Green is a Virgin Islands not-for-profit organization based on St. John, which is dedicated to sustainability throughout the territory.

The free composting workshop will demonstrate various ways for people to reduce, reuse and recycle organic waste from the kitchen. Composting reduces greenhouse emissions and reduces landfill waste; it replenishes the garden soil while providing a healthier environment for plants to grow.

Workshop dates and times:
St. Croix – from 9:30 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Nov. 16, at the UVI Cooperative Extension Service — Research Room 133 (indoors and outdoors, dress to get messy)

St. Thomas – from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 30 and Sunday, Dec. 1, at the Agriculture and Food Fair, Bourdeaux Farmers Market

St. John – from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Nov. 23, at Gifft Hill School, Upper Campus
