Thursday a man was sentenced as a career offender. His conviction of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine resulted in 12 years imprisonment, along with five years of supervised release, a fine of $2,500, and a $100 special assessment, said United States Attorney Delia L. Smith.
According to press release, in July 2020, Jason Lee Current, 45, fled from Hawaii to avoid sentencing on his felony robbery and assault convictions.
On Nov. 5, 2020, a package that was shipped from California containing 112 grams of methamphetamine and 341 grams of marijuana was intercepted. The contraband was removed and replaced with sham drugs and a tracking device, said police.
Current picked up the package from a Post Office in St. Croix on Nov. 10, 2020. He attempted to elude capture after he detected the tracking device but was taken into custody, according to court documents.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations, Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Postal Inspection Services and the Drug Enforcement Administration, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Daniel H. Huston prosecuted the case, per press release.
