Two Injured in Explosion Aboard Vessel Off STJ

Two men were treated Friday at the Schneider Regional Health Center for a variety of injuries they received in an explosion on a boat off St. John Friday morning.

According to the V.I. Police Department, at around 11:07 a.m., Friday, the 911 emergency call center dispatched officers to the Westin Resort harbor in reference to a report of an apparent explosion aboard a vessel.

Police officers and Virgin Islands Fire Service personnel traveled to the vessel Carpe Aura with the assistance of the Westin Resort ferry crew. Witnesses aboard Carpe Aura reported hearing the vessel’s engine start, followed by a clicking noise, then the explosion of the engine.

The two men on board the vessel who were injured were transported to the St. Thomas hospital via ambulance for treatment of injuries that included broken bones, lacerations, and burns. Both men were listed in stable condition.

This incident is currently under investigation by the VIPD and the Virgin Islands Fire Service.
